Friends, Romeans, Country Fans…

Happy New Year, we are off to Nashville in a few days. Time to plant those seeds. Words scribbled on scraps of paper and Starbucks napkins, melodies mumbled and guitar riffs played into cell phones will soon become part of the new EP. This is always an exciting time for me, “the creation process”. It makes me feel less crazy. Those voices in my head are actually saying something I can use. People always ask how that process works. When  I try to explain, this is the reaction I get…

I could tell them I actually do hear voices

Okay, those two clips maybe aren’t the best example but that episode makes me laugh.

Winter is a slow, but busy time for us, so my apologies for not keeping you all in the loop.

Christmas was great! I went back to Winnipeg for 9 days with Family and friends. Every year I am asked for a list of things I want for Christmas. If you are like me, no one can afford to buy you a vintage mint condition 1929 Martin 000-28. Although I think I am worth the $32,000 price tag I don’t have any family, or friends (do I…?) who are independently wealthy.

So this was my list for this year,

  • I like to read
  • I like Music
  • I wear a large shirt

To tell the truth this was one of the best years for gifts I’ve had in a while. “What did you get Darren?”

Let me tell yo:  A Long and McQuade gift card (which I used to help purchase a new Pedal Power ISO 5 for my pedal board, guitar geek stuff), Amanda Palmers new book “The Art of Asking” (plus other assorted fiction), and some new shirts, (3 dress shirts and a cool T-shirt from my brother inlaw out east). Also the iTunes gift cards, of course. This year I purchased stuff from groups I’d never heard before. I went from “best of” lists and here are some of the ones I got.

John Howie and the Rosewood “Everything Except Goodbye”, it’s good country music folks.

Luther Dickinson “Rock and Roll Blues”, if I could only play guitar like this guy.

NQ Arbuckle, CANADIAN ALERT! and what a title “ The Future Happens Anyway”

Sturgill Simpson “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music” more good country, number one on a lot of lists.

54-40 “Radio Love Songs” MORE CANADIAN EAR CANDY!

“Wait a second Darren you said you only purchased stuff you had never heard before” I know but 54-40 rocks, enough said.

Okay! Support live music go out and see a show. Watching it on youtube is not the same. Support Canadian artists! There are so many great bands out there right now.

I’ll be blogging of our escapades down in Nashville so stay tuned.

Cling to your roots and keep an eye on the horizon.
